Lorne Akins is a school on the forefront of technology.

Once again, Lorne Akins "reigns supreme" when it comes to technology and its integration into our curriculum. Inside our walls, we have one 37-station main computer lab, one 28-station lab in the computer lab in the library, and a teacher computer in every classroom (most classrooms also have an additional 2 computers for student use). As of Fall of 2007, we finally have a 12 station "mini-lab" in our Industrial Arts room. Computers in this lab will be used to expand the use of technology in our CTS program.

Also in virtually all classrooms, we have a digital projector connected to a DVD/VHS deck and teacher computer, projecting onto a 115 inch screen. All sources produce sound via a THX-Certified 2.1 speaker system.

All computers in our school have high speed access to the huge pool of resources that the Internet offers. Students and staff also have access to our high speed laser printers and high-volume file services via our state-of-the-art 100Base-T Switched Network.

In our atrium, we usually display the national news on our 60" plasma television to keep everyone engaged in the news around the globe.

Students are schooled in a wide variety of industry-standard applications including:

  • Word processing and Digital Document Layout and Design in Microsoft Word
  • Data processing and management in Microsoft Excel
  • Digital presentation design and delivery in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Multimedia design in HyperStudio
  • Digital Image manipulation in Adobe Photoshop, and Adobe Illustrator
  • Digital animation using Adobe Flash
  • Digital Video editing in Apple iMovie/Final Cut Express HD
  • Improving Math skills via programs such as The Learning Equation, Math Blaster Mystery, and Sketchpad
  • Internet research using varieties of techniques and tools available on the web

Students have at their disposal a large store of recent computer hardware and software in order to ehnance their creative boundaries and prepare them for the future.

Progress in technological skills continues to be a highlight for staff and students at LA.

Computers are also available to students virtually every noon-hour in our two main computer labs.
