PoliciesCode of Student Behaviour and ConductStudents at Lorne Akins are asked to live up to a set of BASIC EXPECTATIONS that are based on common sense and courtesy. Students are taught to recognize the connection between rights and responsibilities and understand that privileges are tied to obligations. Students are expected to live up to the following behavioral standards:
To sum it up: Work Hard and Be Nice. Please walk and talk politely and keep your hands and feet to yourself. Consequences for failure to meet the requirements of the code of student behaviour and conduct may result in student talks with teachers, counsellors and school administration to student suspensions and recommendations for expulsion from the school and/or district. FroshingIn past years, during the last weeks of August and the opening week of school, a few students have been involved in activities that are criminal acts. These acts are a part of what is commonly known as froshing. All students have a right to feel and be safe in their schools. To ensure that this is true in St. Albert, both school jurisdictions and all schools are working together to send out an important message. Many other groups are supporting this message, including the City of St. Albert, the RCMP, Alberta Justice, the St. Albert SAIF Society, the St. Albert Association for People with Disabilities, and the St. Albert Youth Centre. As in the past, Say No to Froshing posters will be displayed throughout St. Albert beginning in August. The message is very clear. Froshing is not acceptable behaviour. It is, in fact, as assault. Any student involved in such an activity will face suspension, and possible legal charges or expulsion. Also applying to Safe and Caring Schools is the issue of weapons. Students may not bring to school, a weapon, replica weapon, or prohibited item, which might threaten or injure another student or staff member. Again, there is no tolerance for such behaviour and consequences could be severe. Dress CodeIn general, students are responsible for determining their own standard of dress and grooming, within the limits of cleanliness and good taste. The principal is responsible for establishing an acceptable standard of school dress and a District policy has been approved by the School Board. Hats and hoods are not to be worn in the building. Staff will determine appropriateness of dress and take measures to ensure that acceptable standards are being met. SmokingStudents are not permitted to smoke or chew tobacco in the school or on school property. Violation will result in communication with parents and offenders face SUSPENSION. Lorne Akins staff and community ask parents to help us take action against students who persist in loitering and smoking near the school. Such incidents will be recorded and reported to parents. Alcohol and Controlled SubstancesAny student who is in possession or under the influence of any illegal substance, on school property, or during school sponsored activities, will face immediate suspension and/or expulsion as outlined in the Drug Free Protocol for St. Albert Schools. Crimestoppers is being successfully used to report illegal activity and the R.C.M.P. may be involved in these cases. Lunch PolicyThere is a $50 fee to allow your student to stay at school for lunch.
Eating lunch at school is a privilege. Students acting irresponsibly during lunch at school can have this privilege removed. LockersEach student will be issued a locker at the beginning of the school year. It is the students responsibility to provide a quality combination lock and to ensure that these lockers are secured at all times. (Locks are available from the school office at a cost of $7.00.) Students are required to keep their lockers free of all marks, writing and stickers. Students must maintain their own locker and not share locker space or combinations with other students. Students are reminded that their lockers are school property. Acceptable Use of Computer and Internet InformationSt. Albert Protestant Schools has established computer and Internet information services for its students. The districts Acceptable Use Policy and Guidelines are available on request. The Internet is a global network that will provide your child with access to a wide range of information from throughout the world. Use of the Internet for educational projects will assist in preparing your child for success in life and work in the years ahead. Student use of this learning resource will be supervised by the teacher. It is possible that your child may find material on the Internet that you would consider objectionable. The districts Acceptable Use Guidelines restrict access to material that is inappropriate in the school environment. There may be some material on the Internet that is not in accord with your family values. We encourage you to use this as an opportunity to have a discussion with your child about your family values and your expectations about how these values should guide your childs activities while they are on the Internet. You have the option of requesting that your child not be provided with access to the Internet. To exercise this option, please sign the Parent Request to Restrict Access (a copy is sent home with each student at the beginning of the school year and forms are also available at the Lorne Akins school office). If you have questions relating to this matter, please take the opportunity to contact the school. |
