The Fine Arts programs at Lorne Akins are changing and growing all the time, thanks mainly to the support of students and the drive of our teachers to continually challenge their students. You have three options to choose from:

Our Arts and Crafts Option seeks to provide opportunities for students to develop and apply the basic principals of art such as shape, colour, balance and texture. Students are challenged to create art from the world surrounding them, drawing inspiration from music, prose, poetry, nature and imagination. Beautiful examples of student work is constantly adorning the walls of our Art room, as well as being displayed in the annual Silent Art Auction and Show.

Our Band Option allows students to explore the world of music. Students have the opportunity to learn to play an instrument from the woodwind, brass, or percussion families as well as how to read music in general and how it applies to their specific instrument. Our Band students are involved in public performances and music festivals in and around the area with concerts at such venues as the Arden Theatre. There is also an annual band trip where select students travel to selected areas of western Canada to play for various schools, as well as enjoy the scenic mountain parks.

Since we are LA, it is only appropriate that we have our own Hollywood trainees. The Drama Option is aimed at introducing the basic concepts of drama. Included are exploration of skills and concepts involved in lighting, stage setting, props and design, script wriging, mime, improvisation and acting. Students can learn the basics of production, and will gain self-confidence at the same time.
